aviva, dont cry
i saw a patient today with esophageal cancer who recently joined hospice. when i walked in she said she wont be needing to order new glasses because she wouldnt live long enough to enjoy them. she was in good spirits, she made several references during the exam regarding her imminent departure. as i was leaving she said" i guess this is goodbye, thank you for coming to the house these last few years i really appreciate it." i told her when she sees the man upstairs to send my best, and she said she would and she'd put in a good word for me. i was wondering if it would be ethical to take a retinal picture at this point in time, as the whole point of picture taking is to compare them to previous or next year pictures. hmmm (i didn't)

I didn't cry. But unlike most Zacks' while speaking about death, I also didn't laugh.
