Interesting Story

Nava was on her way home from school today when she realized that she left her bus ticket in my backpack yesterday. She assessed the weather situation - hot and dusty - and decided to ask around and see if someone could drive her home. She asked a girl in her class who graciously offered to ask her carpool person to drive Nava home. This Mom doesn't know Nava and barely knows me. So she tried asking other mothers for my cellphon number (not my friends) and calling my home phone to ask me permission to drive Nava home. The house phone's ringer was off, and Nava's cellphone was at home, so needless to say, she didn't get through. But she drove Nava home anyway, even though Nava told her we might not be home and that she doesn't have a key. (We are always home when she arrives, and she can't have a key because she's not allowed to be home alone.)

Now, at this point, I will tell you what we were doing. I was on my "day off" in my "day off" clothes watching Cosby Show with Fry on the couch. Nava came into the house a little late with this Mom in tow. The Mom started yelling at me that Nava doesn't have my cellphone number, and she didn't know if we'd be home, and doesn't have a key, and we need an emergency plan, and the Mom tried to call our house number 15 times! All I could think of to say was Thank You For Driving Her Home. Which definitely exasperated the Mom.

Missing bus ticket and cellphone notwithstanding, Nava's a pretty independent person and could have walked home, but she feels comfortable Tremping with kids she knows.

  • Greetings from galus. I think I would have just offered the MOM a beer and told her to "chill". Maybe invite her to sit on the couch and finish watching the Cosby show.
