Daniel Wants to Know

Recently, Arye and I have been discussing the possibility of making Aliya in a general sense. So we thought we should pose the question to the kids, to feel them out first. When I told Daniel the idea we have been throwing around, he said, "Why would we want to do that? What's wrong with Detroit?"

So I ask you, Dear Family, what is wrong with living in Detroit? Why do people make Aliya? More than the obvious "homeland" thing, I mean.

Something on an eight-year-old level please...

  • We have hundreds of pizza shops, you can walk in the street on Shabbat without looking both ways (in some areas), just because you come last somewhere dosnt mean you have to wait in the back in the line; its always a free for all, Purim is a national holiday, the drinking age is only 18, Olim Chadashim in grade school get 10 extra points on tests, there's always fun rallies to go to, half the country is a big beach, no one puts rocks in a sock and beats you over the head yelling "Zhid!" (I guess they dont do it in Detroit either), People are always coming to visit, Burgers Bar makes great french fries, you can do whatever you want and when you get yelled at in Hebrew just put on "I dont understand Hebrew" face. I think thats it.

  • This might be on Daniels level:

Hashem gave Israel to the Jewish people as a present. 90% of our tefilla includes aspects about returning to Israel. After we eat bread, the benching is also 90% of thanks to Hashem for Israel. While Detroit is a very nice place to live, you are just guests there. If Hashem is going to give us a country to live in, we should take advantage of it.

If after davening every day, asking Hashem if we can return to Israel, you decide that it is nicer to stay in Detroit and that is the reason not to move, then why continue davening?
