יום הודו
I had this thought as I was preparing to explain to my Ulpan teacher why I am skipping out on thursday class.
Thursday is יום הודו day of thanks, but הודו also means turkey, so יום הודו has a double meaning of day of thanks and turkey day...perhaps the true origins of having turkey on this special day doesn't have to do with pilgrims..HMMMMMMMM

New Chavrusa
Ask and ye shall be granted....A little bit ago I requested a chavrusa, and someone hooked me up with one..who doesn't speak English.
Today was our first day, we are learning Gemara Shabbat..Here is an example of how our language barrier has effected us so far. We were supposed to meet at 2:15 at the beit mdrash, I have never met this person, just given his name and number. I arrived a few minutes early, peeked into the beit midrash to see if there was anyone who looked like he was waiting to meet with someone. There were a couple guys learning by themselves, none looked up when the new guy walked in, so I called. I told him I was at the beit midrash, and I continued to wait.
After a few mninutes of just standing outside, I ventured back inside, sat down open a sefer and waited for him to come. At 2:30 I decided that I was going to call him - because I had to leave at 3:00. I called him, and I was pretty sure he said that he was just around the corner, to the right of the beit midrash, I went in to wait. This time, someone looked uo from their sefer, and waved me over..their sitting to teh right of the entrace was my chavrusa, he had been sitting there the whole..I told himn that I had been sitting one table over for the last 15 minutes waiting..we had a nice laugh, and then started learning.
I think I understood most of what he said in regarding the learning so that was good

Thanksgiving Dinner with all the Trimmings
Since we can't have Thanksgiving at Dee's, we are inviting all Zacks' who will be in Israel (Sar and Shlomo, I KNOW you're not Zacks' - but, HELLO - you WILL be at Dee's!) to our house for a traditional dinner on Thursday, November, 27.
Turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, cherry pie, and pecan pie will be served. Cooking participation is welcome...let me know.
BYOBN (bring your own beaded necklaces...) and stories from Thanksgivings past.

Cookie Experiement
Last week I started making cookies again, and it isb't the same. I was told by mom and Golda that the margarine here is bad. Last week I took Mom and Golda's advice and I melted the margarine and then poured it in with the other ingredients. The batter looked weird and the cookies didn't come out like they used to in my previous life/.
This week Nat suggested using something like "I can't believe it's not butter" the Mazola brand here. The batter was very sweet, but very gooey. The cookies came out really sweet, good, but not how I want them.
Next week I will try using oil and seeing how that comes out.
The strangest thing is that in both cases the batter has made about 15 cookies less than before.

the facts of the case are these:
1999 ford windstar with over 99,000 miles on it. it goes into the shop every few months for some repair. usually costing between 300-700 dollars. the heater is broken now and needs to be fixed. the last repair was just done last month.
these are the facts of the case and they are undisputed.
i can get a new kia sedona for somewhere between 16,000 aqnd 18,000. when do i call it quits for clifford and get a new car?
i cant afford it but thats besides the point...

its snowing
why are people in detroit so stupid when it snows? do they have no recollection of how to drive in poor conditions. every year the first snow brings out the worst drivers. there's an accident on every road right now. traffic is very slow and it looks like its going to be a long driving day for those of us still working here. devo said it took her 10 minutes to get from bais yaakov to curves this morning. just sitting in traffic on 10 mile! i hereby proclaim that all stupid people who dont know how to drive should STAY OFF THE ROADS WHEN IT SNOWS

ahron the plumber
ahron has hit a new stage in life, he likes to play in toilets. no not the stick your hands in and play in the water like a younger child, he likes to stick toothbruhes in there and then suck on them, he also doesnt seem to care whether the toilet has been flushed from the previous user or not. other things he likes to do with toilets is fill them up wth tissues and toilet paper. we are very proud of him.
in other news we went to the yeshivah dinner tonight and was hobnobbing with the NEW mayor of detroit ken cockrel jr, the goveror of our great state, several senators and "honorable"s, (judges, mayors, oakland county executives ) ann newman. the senator from the great state of indiana spoke but we werent there for that long, dinner definitely was lacking; there wasnt even hairy cherry chicken! the hors d'ouvers were stopped 15 minutes before dinner was to be served and that was very upsetting to me. you only go to eat the little hot dogs, deli ,potato puffs etc. all in all there were well over 200 tables at the dinner and it seemed like a good turnout. (maybe they can turn ahron around, who knows)

Jonah the philosopher
On Shabbat Nat took the boys to our nice view spot, which overlooks an arab village. Then it was prayer time, and they started making noise, so Jonah wanted to know why they had a shul if they aren't Jewish, then he asked, if they arent jewish, why do they live in Israel, they should live in Detroit, and finally, why does hashem make non jewish people

frog is dead :(
a few weeks ago i bought two dwarf frogs for my fish tank. they are totally submersible and dont need to breathe regular air like people do. well one died within the first week or so and was partially eaten by his tank mates. the other has persevered until...today. when he left his froggy legs in the mouths of his friends and went on to froggy heaven. i am an utter failure at raising dwarf frogs and now i will turn my attention back to my fish (and my children).
